Summary

Details of premises where an evaporative condenser or cooling tower are sited must be notified to the Local Authority.

Eligibility criteria

The purpose of the notification is to identify potential areas that could give rise to spread of infection eg. legionella and to ensure preventative measures are taken to eliminate the risk of infection arising to employees and the public.

The number of cooling towers on site should be included on the notification form.

There is no fee required for the notification.

Evaluation process

When the notification is received the details will be added to the cooling towers register.

A safety officer may visit your premises to check water quality or any safety issues.

Will tacit consent apply?

Yes. This means that you will be able to act as though your notification has been received and the cooling tower added to the public register. You may be subject to periodic inspection visits by the relevant enforcing authority.
