Battery recycling rules

EU rules state from 1 February 2010 stores that sell more than one pack of 4 AA batteries a day must provide battery recycling bins. At present most batteries go to landfill, where they could end up leaking toxic chemicals.

Using rechargeable batteries is the best way to avoid waste in the first place but if you do have old batteries please help by recycling them at a store.

It doesn't matter if you bought the batteries from a different store they can be recycled free in any store that has a container, just ask at the information/customer services desk.

Freegle is the new Freecycle

The local reuse community 'Richmond recycle' enables people to give away unwanted items and pick up things they need, helping to keep useable items out of landfill. It was formerly known under the USA Freecycle name, but since March 2009 it broke away and has now become part of the UK Freegle network.
