Dignity in Care

Dignity in Care is a national campaign that aims to create a care system where there is zero tolerance of abuse and disrespect of older people. It is led by the Department of Health in partnership with many organisations that purchase or deliver care to older people to protect the interests of those using care services and their carers. Sir Michael Parkinson is the Ambassador for the national campaign which aims to win ‘hearts and minds’, change the culture of care services, and place a greater emphasis on improving the quality of care and the experience of people using services. These services include NHS hospitals, community health services, care homes, and home support services.

Richmond upon Thames Council in partnership with Richmond and Twickenham Primary Care Trust are pleased to announce the launch of a local campaign. The aim of the local campaign is to raise awareness of zero tolerance of abuse amongst all care providers and encourage older people to speak up when things aren’t right.

We have set up a phone number and email address that older people, carers and care providers can call should they have any concerns relating to a care service or person providing care. We have produced postcards(pdf, 433KB) and posters(pdf, 411KB) to raise awareness and promote dignity in care.

The dignity challenge

High quality services that respect people’s dignity should:

1. Have a zero tolerance of all forms of abuse.
2. Support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family.
3. Treat each person as an individual by offering a personalised service.
4. Enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control.
5. Listen and support people to express their needs and wants.
6. Respect people’s right to privacy.
7. Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of retribution.
8. Engage with family members and carers as care partners.
9. Assist people to maintain confidence and a positive self esteem.
10. Act to alleviate people’s loneliness and isolation.
