Emergency temporary housing

We have a duty to provide housing if:

  • you are eligible;
  • you are homeless; and
  • you (or someone on your application) have a priority need.

What is available

We use a variety of schemes to accommodate those who are eligible.

These include:

  • Bed and breakfast
  • Hostel
  • Short-term let (unfurnished house, flat or maisonette)

You would be responsible for the weekly rent in each accommodation type. If no local accommodation is available you may be placed outside of the Borough.

How it works

You will need to make an appointment to speak to us about your situation. You will also need to complete an Emergency Housing Application Form (pdf, 166.8 KB) and bring it along with you to your appointment.

If we have reason to believe that you are eligible (including being homeless and in priority need), we have a duty to provide you with accommodation until we have concluded our enquiries.

Should we then accept a continuing duty towards you and your household, we may offer alternative suitable accommodation.

Complaints

If you have a problem with your temporary accommodation, please follow the guidance below. If you are unable to resolve the problem using this guidance please contact your caseworker for further help.

Housing association tenants must contact their housing association about repairs.

Bed and breakfast

Speak to the owner or manager first as they may be able to deal with your complaint. We make regular visits to the bed and breakfast properties we use to ensure they meet legal standards.

Hostel

Contact the hostel warden to discuss your complaint.

Short-term let

Call us on 020 8891 7442 to discuss any problems or arrange for repairs.

Furniture

We may be able to arrange for the collection, storage and delivery of your furniture, but you will need to pay for the service. Your caseworker can tell you more about the costs.

If you do not have furniture your casework can refer you to Richmond Furniture Scheme. You will be responsible for the costs of furniture.

If you get certain benefits you can apply for a Budgeting Loan which can be used to pay essential things like furniture.
