Public transport initiatives
Richmond and TfL both promote and encourage school pupils and staff to use public transport to travel to and from school.
School Travel Party Scheme
Schools within a London borough can benefit from free off-peak school group travel from Monday to Friday.
Setting yourself up on this scheme not only eases your travel arrangements and costs, but also counts towards STARS accreditation.
Zip Oyster photocard
School can also inform pupils and parents/carers that Zip Oyster photocards give free travel on buses and trams and reduced rates on other transportation to under 18 year olds.
STARS Public Transport Initiatives
There are several STARS initiatives that schools are most likely already engaging in which can be included in their accreditation activities:
- Public Transport used for School Trips: most schools use public transport for some school outings.
- Promotion of responsible behaviour on public transport and personal safety are both covered in the Junior Citizens programme that all our Year 6 pupils enjoy annually.
- Although not strictly public transport, the use of coaches for school trips negates the need for parents/carers to transport pupils by car and is therefore seen as a STARS activity.
