Release Date: 07 January 2019
Ian Dodds, Interim Chief Executive of the award-winning council-owned company, Achieving for Children (AfC), has been appointed as the permanent Managing Director of the company.
Ian, who has been working for AfC since it was established, has been interim lead of the company since Nick Whitfield’s retirement in September.
AfC is a not-for-profit community interest company established in 2014 and now jointly-owned by three councils (Richmond, Royal Borough of Kingston and the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead). AfC is commissioned to deliver social care and educational services for children across the boroughs. It also works with other councils across the country who are seeking to improve their services.
The Managing Director role is a newly created position and will replace the Chief Executive role within the organisation. A new interim Director of Children’s Services for Richmond has also been appointed – James Thomas. James has a wealth of experience, having previously held the same role in Thameside and Newham councils, prior to that he was the Director of Family Services in Westminster City Council.
Ian Dodds, said:
“As part of the team who established AfC four years ago, I still have the same passion for providing high quality children’s services in Richmond, Kingston and the Windsor and Maidenhead.
“AfC was set up to be an innovative, ground breaking partnership, between three boroughs. We’ve achieved a lot in our first four years, but we must continue to put everything we have into giving children the best possible start in life. I’m excited to be leading AfC into the next stage of our development.”
Cllr Gareth Roberts, the Leader at Richmond Council, said:
“As funding continues to be reduced, there are many challenges that lie ahead in children’s services across all our boroughs. We need Achieving for Children to be led by someone strong and inspiring. Someone who will continue to make a positive impact on our young people and their families. I wish Ian the best in his role and look forward to continue working with him.
Cllr Liz Green, the Leader at Kingston Council, said:
“I am pleased that Ian has been appointed to this new role which will replace the Chief Executive position for AfC. He will be working closely with the council's new Chief Executive, Ian Thomas and our Interim Director of Children’s Services, Pauline Maddison and together, I believe they offer the strong leadership required to deliver these key services during financially challenging times.”
Cllr Simon Dudley, Leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council, said:
“Congratulations to Ian on his new role as Managing Director. He is a familiar face at Achieving for Children and the council is looking forward to working with him even more closely in the coming years to provide the best children’s services for the borough.”
David Archibald, Chair of the AfC Board of Directors, said:
"We're delighted to appoint Ian to this crucial post. Ian is a respected and popular leader and his knowledge and understanding of AfC's organisational model makes him the outstanding candidate for this role. I know that with Ian at the helm, AfC is well placed to continue to prosper in the future."
