Silver Swimmers are a group of local swimmers, all aged between 60 and 80 years old, who have decided to take on a swimming challenge to support COSMIC charity.
Silver Swimmers will be in relay teams with each swimmer aiming to swim the distance of the English Channel (1,000 lengths, 32kms or 21 miles) in one day at Pools on the Park. The Silver Swimmers swim in the outdoor pool in Richmond throughout the year, whatever the weather. The group all met over a year ago swimming in the Over 60's slot at the pool. Two of the swimmers, Professor Parviz Habibi and Andre Jason, run the charity COSMIC, which supports the Paediatric Intensive Care units at St Mary's Paddington and Queen Charlotte's Hospitals mainly through Channel Swimming relays. The idea to swim the length of the English Channel was suggested to the pool management who were very enthusiastic and supportive of the idea. The group have managed to get 20 swimmers signed up from amongst the regulars in the Over 60s session. The group are not a club and the challenge is inclusive of any swimmer looking to support COSMIC with swimmers of mixed ability in the group. The group are hoping to encourage older residents (ages range from 60 - 80 years) that it is never too late to take on a new challenge. In preparation for the event the group have become a lot fitter and have made some very good friends.Find out more about the swimming challenge.
