Shop at your favourite local independent shops – now online!

11 May 2021

Richmond upon Thames residents now have the chance to browse online for products from local, independent retailers across the borough – all in one place!

Richmond Council is providing retail businesses access to the Mytown Shops online shopping platform, giving many the opportunity to sell their products online for the first time.

Residents will be able to order from multiple local retailers and either have their combined shopping brought to their doorstep in one simple electric bike delivery, or use the click and collect service. The new e-cargo bikes include chilled and ambient storage, meaning your orders can arrive fresh at your door, while ensuring all deliveries have zero carbon emissions.

Local shoppers can now browse and buy products from over 50 shops based in the borough, including butchers and fishmongers, grocers, book shops, florists – and the list is growing as all businesses are invited to sign-up and operate commission free for the first 12 months!

Cllr Richard Baker, Spokesperson for Economic and Business, said:

"During the pandemic we have all got to know our local areas even better and have experienced the best that shopping local has to offer. As restrictions continue to ease, we know that people will be looking forward to venturing further afield and revisiting favourites places across the city.

"It is really important we hold onto the shop local sentiment and make it convenient and attractive for people in the future so that local, independent businesses can come back better and stronger after the pandemic.

"This is why the Council is investing to support businesses. They have been working hard to make sure they are COVID-19 secure so that our high streets are safe and enjoyable for people to visit, but we also acknowledge people enjoy the variety and convenience they get through online shopping.

"The Mytown Shops site gives businesses, who might not be able to sell online independently, the chance to do so and deliver to their customers in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner.

"I am so looking forward to seeing the Council’s Mytown Shops e-cargo bikes all over the borough – a sign that residents are using and loving this new service! I encourage everyone to get shopping!"
