Kew Society launches Historic Walk with support from the Local Area Fund
8 September 2022
Last Friday 2 September 2022, the Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Councillor Julia Cambridge, and local MP Sarah Olney attended the official launch of a new circular walk around Kew devised by the Kew Society and part-funded by Richmond Council's Local Area Fund.
The aim of the walk is to encourage people to explore the local area and discover some lesser-known places of historic interest whilst getting some exercise and taking in the beautiful sights in and around Kew including the riverside. The idea for the walk came during the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 when everyone was confined to their local area often discovering places they knew nothing about.Kew Society Chair, Shiona Williams said:
'The pandemic really made us realise how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful area and to have the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on our doorstep, but we also want to draw people's attention parts of Kew other than the gardens that they might not have noticed before.'After the official launch a group of walkers set off from the Tap on the Line in Kew Village to try out the 2.7 mile circular walk for the first time. The project was funded by a grant from Richmond Council's Local Area Fund and the Kew Society.
