Adolescent Response Team (ART)
ART is a specialised social work team which works with young people between 11 and 18 years of age, their families and carers. This team gets involved with a young person where a number of issues have escalated to the point of crisis and the family’s stability has been jeopardised to the point of breakdown.
At times, this team may get involved with a family where the living arrangements have already broken down to the point that seems irreparable to the family, therefore the focus of the intervention will be on safely reuniting the family and looking at a sustainable support plan that considers the needs of the whole family.
This team supports young people who may have a combination of these difficulties:
- At risk of becoming or has been excluded from the education system
- Significant behavioural issues including high aggression as a result of a learning difficulty or disability such as ADHD
- Significant offending behaviour and/or substance misuse issues which are impacting on the stability within the home
- Significant mental health needs such as severe depressive episodes and self-harming
- Challenging family dynamics and/or significant parental difficulties that impact on the relationships and stability within the family
The team is made up of social workers and adolescent support workers. There are named workers for each geographical area across the boroughs of Richmond and Kingston.
They undertake assessments of need under Section 17 of the Children’s Act 1989 and from this they implement a care plan to support the young person alongside other professionals. The social worker would be considered as a ‘lead professional’ and would coordinate all other professionals to ensure that that most appropriate intervention is implemented.
Adolescent support workers
These workers work closely with the young people and the families to offer practical support and tools to help the families create change and overcome the crisis periods, alongside the social worker. This may include delivering parenting strategies, one-to-one direct work, activity-based sessions, attending appointments with the family and signposting to community resources.
The team uses a Team Around the Child/Family model. This model ensures that a child- centred approach is taken by all professionals and agencies involved with regular information sharing and meetings to review the care plan. The team works with the young person, family and wider network to ensure that agreed goals, aims and actions are implemented and reviewed throughout the intervention.
