Festival of Learning 2018

Festival of Learning is a national celebration of lifelong learning, with events taking place across the borough’s libraries throughout June.

Have a go at something new, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve!

Family History for Beginners

Jane Baxter, Local Studies Manager, will guide you through the resources available in the Richmond upon Thames collection.

Using a worked example of the local Etherington family who lived in the area for over 200 years, Jane will demonstrate how the pieces of the jigsaw fit together to build up a picture of their lives.

She will demonstrate how to follow clues to discover information in unexpected places.

How your baby learns to talk: with Dr Pauline Foster

Dr Pauline Foster, Professor of Applied Linguistics at St Mary’s University, will explore the stages that young children go through as they acquire the sounds, words and grammar of the language(s) that adults use to them and around them.

It will show how this complex process is navigated by children all over the world, and how (with very few exceptions) it is completed successfully, effortlessly and without conscious awareness.
