Play Streets takes place on Sunday 22 September. There are several things you must do to be able to take part. The deadline for applications is Friday 23 August.

Apply for a Play Street

Steps to take

  1. Discuss it with your neighbours and ask if they support the idea. We have provided templates and materials to help you with document support.
  2. Consider if you would like to apply for a small grant to help fund an activity on the day.
  3. Apply for Play Streets online before the deadline.
  4. Promote Play Streets using the templates and materials we have provided.
  5. Enjoy your Play Street on Sunday 22 September.

For this trial we are waiving the road closure fee. However, you will need to cover the costs for the local posters/letters to inform and engage with your neighbours and promote the event.

Things to consider

Parking and vehicle access

Residents will still be able to access the road but will be asked to drive at a very reduced speed and will be walked in/out by stewards. You will therefore need to ensure there are stewards at the closures throughout the day.

Parking cannot be restricted for a Play Street.

Insurance

In most cases, you do not need public liability insurance cover for a Play Street. However, where you think insurance would be a good idea, you might find it helpful to visit Streets Alive and The Big Lunch for further advice. The costs can always be split between residents, or you could hold a raffle or ask for donations to cover the costs.

Risk Assessment

In most cases you do not need a risk plan for a Play Street, but you may wish to think about how you can minimise risks and have a back-up plan.

For example:

  • What to do if there is bad weather
  • Make sure there is enough adult supervision at all times
  • Make sure that there are no ball based activities (ie: broken glass!)

Licence for food

As this is a private event, you do not need a licence for food under the Licensing Act 2003.

Make sure you tidy up afterwards

Let people know in advance what time the party will finish and have a section set aside for bin bags and recycling. Take your rubbish and recycling home but remember it will be collected one day later than your normal collection day. If you have too much recycling to store, take it to your local recycling site.

Do not leave bin bags on the streets as this may attract foxes and vermin.
