We try our best to ensure that all members of our community are correctly registered and can exercise their full democratic rights.

Registering to vote

Mencap and the Cabinet Office have created a step-by-step easy read guide to registering to vote (pdf, 448 KB) for people with a learning disability.

You can use this easy read registration form (pdf, 1.4 MB) to make your application.

Electoral materials

Electoral materials are prescribed in law. However, if you wish to receive general information about registration or elections in a different format such as Braille, large print, or in a community language, please contact us.

We try to make the voting process as easy as possible for everyone and are committed to ensuring all our polling stations are accessible. Electoral Services provide special facilities to help voters with disabilities:

  • All polling stations are wheelchair accessible (special ramps are provided if needed).
  • All polling stations have booths adapted for wheelchair users.
  • Large print versions of ballot papers are available in every polling station.
  • Special aids are provided to enable visually impaired voters to mark their ballot papers without assistance.

Presiding Officers are in charge of polling stations and they can provide advice or assistance if required. Someone else can assist you at the polling station (e.g. a support worker) if they are either:

  • A qualified elector (and they have not already helped more than one other person vote), or
  • A close relative (father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, civil partner, son or daughter – if they are aged 18 years or over)

More information about polling station voting can be found on the Electoral Commission website.

If you don't want to go to the polling station to vote, please remember that all voters are entitled to vote by post (and proxy if they apply for each election), and voters with disabilities are also allowed to apply for a long term proxy.
