A community approach to night-time safety in the borough
10 April 2025
Richmond Council continues to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors enjoying the borough’s vibrant night-time economy. From our Safe Havens initiative to enhanced CCTV coverage, we are committed to ensuring that the borough remains a welcoming place for everyone after dark.
Councillor Katie Mansfield, Richmond Council’s White Ribbon Champion said: "Feeling safe in our community, especially at night, is something everyone deserves. These initiatives show our ongoing commitment to making Richmond a place where people feel protected and supported. By working together, we are creating a culture where safety is a shared responsibility, and no one feels alone."
The initiatives are possible thanks to the strong partnership between the Council, local businesses, emergency services and the wider community. We will continue working with partners to explore sustainable ways to support those in need during busy night-time hours as we all have a part to play.
Safe Havens
The Safe Havens scheme is an essential part of our night-time safety approach, providing immediate refuge for anyone feeling vulnerable or at risk. Businesses across Barnes have partnered with the Council to offer a safe place where people can wait, seek assistance, or contact friends and family. Clearly marked and easily accessible, these havens play a key role in preventing situations from escalating and offering reassurance to those in need.
Current partners include:
- The Bridge Pub
- Oso Café
- The Sun Inn
- Chesterton’s Estate Agents
- Alma Café
CCTV
Our extensive network of CCTV cameras continues to be a crucial deterrent against crime and anti-social behaviour. The system enables real-time monitoring and rapid response from local authorities and emergency services. Recent data shows that the presence of CCTV has significantly contributed to de-escalating incidents before they turn serious, ensuring that Richmond remains a safe and enjoyable place for all.
Safe Space
The Richmond Safe Space at Richmond Station has been an invaluable service, offering medical support, welfare assistance, and a place of safety for those feeling vulnerable. While the operational hours have changed, our commitment to providing a safe environment remains unwavering.
Find it on Saturdays from 8 to 11pm, at the green marquee at Richmond Station.
