Learn about swifts and become a swift saver

Community news on behalf of Barnes Common | 4 April 2025

On Saturday 12 April, join Barnes Common for a conservation talk on swifts.

With the arrival of spring, let’s hear from Edward Mayer, the founder of Swift Conservation and a leading expert on swifts, about these amazing birds.

Swifts only spend 3 to 4 months with us each summer, between April/May and August. While they are here they bring spectacular aerial action and excitement to our urban lives. They prefer houses and churches as their nesting areas, squeezing through gaps to nest inside the roof, but with building renovations, more and more nesting sites are lost. Swifts are now on the red list of conservation concern, declining by 62% between 1995 and 2021.

Come along to the talk to find out more about swifts and how you can help them. Tea and biscuits will be served.
