Testing the waters: River surveying and citizen science taster session
Community news on behalf of Habitats & Heritage | 17 April 2026
Join Habitats & Heritage and Thames Landscape Strategy for a practical introduction to river surveying and monitoring along the River Thames. This guided session will combine short walks with hands‑on activities to explore river health, local ecology, and environmental history.
Participants will take part in a range of introductory surveying activities, subject to conditions on the day. These may include water quality testing, freshwater invertebrate sampling, citizen science monitoring, and exploring wet woodland habitats.
Core activities will include:
- Water quality testing using Hanna checkers
- Learning about the history of London’s sewer system, including outfall sites and their ecological context
- Participation in the nationwide citizen science programme Big River Watch
This event is suitable for adults with an interest in rivers, nature, and environmental monitoring. No prior experience is required.
- Date: Sunday 26 April
- Time: 1 to 3.30pm
- Location: End of Old Deer Park car park - check exact location via what3words
Please note that the session will involve walking, standing, and bending. Participants are advised to wear wellies or sturdy footwear, as some activities will take place close to the water.
If you would like a slightly shorter version or one explicitly aligned to council accessibility or safeguarding standards, this can be revised accordingly.
