Making Richmond more breastfeeding friendly

Nearly 80 local organisations and businesses across Richmond upon Thames have committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for breastfeeding parents, by joining the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.

Becoming a more breastfeeding-friendly borough means more than just raising awareness. It’s about creating a community where people who breastfeed feel welcomed, supported and have a space to go.

The scheme is free to join and is open to premises from hairdressers, shops, libraries and museums to community centres, GP practices and health centres - anywhere that is open to the public.

This week is World Breastfeeding Week (1 to 7 August 2026) and we’re a shining a spotlight on local organisations and businesses who are supporting a breast-feeding friendly Richmond.

Join the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme

Help make Richmond upon Thames a more welcoming place for parents feeding their babies while out and about. Local businesses, community venues, voluntary organisations and other publicly accessible premises can sign up to the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme to show they offer a safe, welcoming and supportive space for families.

By becoming a Breastfeeding Friendly venue, your business demonstrates its commitment to supporting families, showing the community you’re providing an inclusive and welcoming place, and joining a growing network of Richmond organisations helping to make the borough more family friendly. The scheme is free, simple to join, and provides recognised branding that shows customers they are welcome.

Support for breastfeeding

Breastfeeding can offer important health benefits for babies and parents, and support is available in the borough to help families make the feeding choices that are right for them.

When you're out and about, look for stickers and posters with the BfN Breastfeeding Friendly logo.

See the list of local businesses signed up to the scheme for anyone to pop in and use their facilities to breastfeed or committed to support customers to breastfeed at on their premises.

Breastfeeding support in Richmond is provided by the Health Visiting Service and supported by infant feeding leads within the hospital and community. Breastfeeding support clinics are available around the borough to support mothers as needed and they are made up of health visitors, nursery nurses and lactation consultants. 

Through breastfeeding drop-in groups, drop-in Well Baby clinics and one-to-one specialist infant feeding clinics, our Health Visiting team provides information and support on breastfeeding and maximising breastmilk, helping families to feed safely and responsively.
