Keys unlock new chapter for Clarendon SEND School

The keys have been formally handed over for a new school for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the borough, helping more children access specialist education closer to home.

Construction of the new Clarendon School satellite centre in Petersham is now complete, with staff moving into their new learning environment ahead of welcoming its first pupils at the start of the autumn term.

Councillor Julia Cambridge, Chair of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Every child deserves a school where they are understood, encouraged and given the right support to succeed.

“The new Clarendon School will provide specialist spaces, modern facilities and a welcoming environment to help pupils build confidence, develop independence and reach their potential.

“I’m so looking forward to seeing pupils and staff move into their new school and benefit from the facilities and support it provides.”

The purpose-built facility has been designed to provide high-quality specialist education for up to 77 pupils with moderate learning difficulties and complex needs, including autism. It includes modern classrooms, specialist teaching and therapy spaces, a multi-purpose hall, improved outdoor areas and facilities designed to support children to learn, develop and build independence.

The new school is part of Richmond Council’s wider commitment to increasing specialist SEND provision, helping more children access the right support within the borough and reducing the need for out-of-borough placements and long journeys to school.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said: “This is an important milestone for Clarendon School, local families and our borough.

“By increasing the number of specialist places available locally, we can help more children access the right education and support without needing to travel outside the borough.”

The school has been designed by Playle and Partners LLP, with Kier leading on construction. The development also includes biodiversity improvements across the site, and opportunities for outdoor learning. Sustainability has been built into the design, including a bio-solar green roof and air source heat pumps.

The new Clarendon School satellite centre is due to open in Autumn 2026.
