Older residents could be eligible for Attendance Allowance worth up to £5,644 a year

20 February 2025

We have written to households across the borough who could benefit from increased monthly payments through the government’s Attendance Allowance scheme.

Attendance Allowance is additional income that you can apply for when you reach State Pension Age and need help with care, or regular support and assistance.

It ignores any income or savings you may have and is available to everyone of pension age who has needed support with their daily activities for at least six months.

Eligibility

You are eligible for this extra money if the following conditions both apply:

  • You have a disability or illness, including mental and physical disabilities
  • Your condition means you need someone to help look after you

You do not need to have someone caring for you in order to claim Attendance Allowance. What matters is that you need help, not whether you are currently getting any.

How much you could claim

This allowance is paid at two different rates – depending on the level of care you need. The current rates are between £72.65 and £108.55 a week, which is payable every four weeks. People who qualify for Attendance Allowance may also be eligible for additional Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction.

How to apply

You can apply for Attendance Allowance by ringing the Department for Work and Pensions helpline on 0800 731 0122 to request a claim form.

There is more information on how to claim on GOV.UK.
