A portrait commemorating a Barnes deacon and humanitarian who was tragically killed in a road accident has been unveiled at Viera Gray House, which bears her name.
A new portrait of Viera Gray, painted by local Barnes artist Rachel Parker, has been installed in the not-for-profit care home and is proudly displayed in the main hall. It represents the connection between the care community and the person whose name, dedication and love for society’s most vulnerable citizens inspires the home’s practice every day.
Viera Gray spent her life doing whatever she could for other people, from working in Rwanda as a missionary nurse to her role as Deacon of St Mary’s Church in Barnes. Southwark Cathedral was packed for her funeral in September 1989, and her memory was honoured three years later with the opening of Viera Gray House in 1992.
Lay Reader Emeritus at St Mary’s Church Christabel Gairdner who knew Viera personally, helped to unveil the portrait at a special event. She said: "Viera would have been delighted to see the care community built in her honour in this care home. Her calling was to work with those most vulnerable, and she travelled tirelessly on her famous bicycle where the need was greatest.
“She left a remarkable legacy in Barnes and beyond, and this home is a testament to that. My mother lived here for 10 years and, whenever I asked her how she felt, she always said ‘I am very lucky’.
“I am delighted to have helped unveil this beautiful portrait in Viera’s honour. Rachel has done a fantastic job of capturing Viera’s unique spirit."
In the event, lunch, tea and cakes were provided and in attendance were representatives from local community groups, businesses and charities including St Mary’s Church and Gail’s Bakery, who donate weekly goodies to the care home’s staff.
Reflecting on the commission, artist Rachel Parker said: “I feel very honoured to have been asked to paint Viera Gray. I hope my portrait succeeds in capturing what a remarkable woman she was, inspires people to learn about her work, and helps to keep her legacy alive at the care home and beyond."
Home Manager Shubhes Shrestha said: "Viera Gray embodied the values that we hold dear at Greensleeves Care. It has been a pleasure to unveil our wonderful new portrait of this very special human being as a symbol of the home’s commitment to keeping Viera’s legacy alive.
"At the home, we feel deeply connected with our local community so it felt important to work with an artist from Barnes. We’re delighted with the finished piece by Rachel.
"Anyone who knew Viera or has an interest in her work, is welcome to come and visit Viera Gray House to see the portrait in person and to get to know their local care home."
