Project to reopen Victorian explorer’s tomb is launched

Community news on behalf of Habitats & Heritage | 29 July 2024

Habitats & Heritage announced its latest heritage project, Burton: Exploring without Boundaries, in the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Magdalen.

Supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will restore the unique and stunning Grade II Burton Mausoleum and deliver an educational programme for diverse audiences. It will also improve the setting of the mausoleum, establishing a sustainable, accessible and environmentally friendly model to the conservation of everyday heritage.

The tomb is the final resting place of Sir Richard and Lady Isabel Burton. Habitats & Heritage will restore the building and explore narratives surrounding Sir Richard Burton, who is most remembered for seeking the source of the River Nile and undertaking the Hajj in disguise.
