South London leaders have called for action to close the transport divide, launching a bold new strategy setting out the investment needed to transform connectivity, unlock growth and make everyday journeys quicker, easier and more reliable.
The South London Partnership’s (SLP) Mind the Gap: Connecting South London strategy unveiled last night calls on Government, Transport for London, Network Rail and industry partners to work together to deliver the improvements needed to match South London’s ambition and potential.
Speaking at the launch, Councillor Gareth Roberts, Chair of the South London Partnership and Leader of Richmond Council, said: “South London has been overlooked for too long when it comes to major transport investment.
“We have thriving communities, growing businesses, and huge potential, but too many residents are still held back by poor connections, unreliable journeys, and gaps in the network.
“Mind the Gap is a clear call for action. It sets out the improvements needed now, from better bus, rail, tram, and active travel connections, alongside the long-term investment required to unlock new homes, support local businesses, and drive sustainable growth. Better transport means better access to jobs, education, healthcare, and town centres.
“We are ready to work with Government, Transport for London, Network Rail and our partners to deliver the investment South London needs and deserves.”
Representing the boroughs of Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames and Sutton, the strategy focuses on four priorities:
- Strengthening connections – increasing rail services and improving strategic interchanges including Clapham Junction, Richmond, Wimbledon, Morden and East Croydon.
- Creating a fully integrated transport system – with stronger connections across bus, tram, rail and active travel networks.
- Securing a clear way forward for Crossrail 2 – to support long-term growth and connectivity.
- Delivering a transport system for all – with improved accessibility, affordability and inclusion.
Together, these priorities combine practical improvements that can be delivered in the near term, such as a stronger bus network, with transformational long-term projects including the Thameslink Growth Corridor and Crossrail 2.
Better transport means shorter, simpler and more reliable journeys for residents, while helping businesses grow, supporting new homes and creating the connections needed to drive sustainable economic growth.
University of Roehampton, Vice Chancellor Professor Jean-Noël Ezingeard said: “Transport connectivity is fundamental to creating opportunity. For students accessing education, apprentices travelling to workplaces, healthcare professionals in training, and residents seeking employment, reliable and affordable transport can be the difference between aspiration and achievement.
“The University of Roehampton strongly supports the South London Partnership’s vision for a better-connected South London. By investing in transport infrastructure and improving access across the sub-region, we can unlock inclusive growth, strengthen skills and workforce development, and ensure that our communities are equipped to benefit from the opportunities of the future. We are proud to support this shared ambition and to work alongside partners to deliver it.”
Socius Director Steve Eccles said: “Strong transport connectivity is fundamental to our ambition of becoming a world-leading destination for cancer research, treatment, and innovation. By continuing to invest in transport, we are creating opportunities, improving lives, and realising the full potential of The London Cancer District.
“Through collaboration with partners across South London, we can strengthen the connectivity that will transform lives and drive growth – and Mind the Gap: Connecting South London marks the next step in that journey.”
BeRichmond Chief Executive Officer Fay Cannings said: “Mind the Gap: Connecting South London is a vital step toward strengthening connectivity, unlocking sustainable growth, and enhancing Richmond’s position as one of London’s most attractive destinations to work, visit, learn and do business.
“Working collaboratively with the South London Partnership, we are supportive of them driving forward delivery – ensuring that this strategy translates into tangible improvements in accessibility and opportunity. Its timely and ambitious approach will help ensure Richmond remains competitive, well-connected and resilient for the future.”
Mind the Gap: Connecting South London launched last night at The Exchange, Twickenham, brought together local government, transport providers, business and education leaders to build support for the investment needed to improve connectivity across South London.
