Explore the Amazon Forest with Kew Society
Community news on behalf of Kew Society | 21 June 2024
On Friday 28 June, residents are invited to join the ‘From Kew to the Amazon’ talk to learn about indigenous food sovereignty and reforestation in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
The event will be delivered by Nick Ovenden, founder of local charity Yakum, and will also feature a discussion on his works promoting forest conservation and reforestation, a documentary about his journey to Pëëkëëya, and some music recorded from huge Amazonian fruit trees.
Nick and two collaborators, Remi Bumstead and Joey Dean, travelled to Pëëkëëya to support the displaced Siekopai peoples recovering some seeds for growing important forest foods in northern Ecuador.
The recovered seeds are now germinated in nurseries, with plans to be planted in Siekopai forest gardens. It is also a part of a larger reforesting project on Siekopai territory, which was deforested by land grabbers some years back.
