Community power: caring for our trees
4 June 2026
National environmental charity The Tree Council brought more than 30 volunteers from nine organisations to Kneller Gardens in Twickenham for a day of community giveback. Discover what they achieved and explore simple ways you can get involved.
With funding from The Tree Council for new trees and hedgerows across the borough, the hands-on day focused on helping these young plantings thrive.
Volunteers lent a hand with watering, weeding, mulching and clearing brambles. They also enjoyed short walk and talks around the park, learning about the heritage of Kneller Gardens’ trees and the positive impact of river restoration along the River Crane.
We would like to thank The Tree Council for making the day possible, and our local partners Let’s Go Outside and Learn and The Conservation Volunteers for their support.
More ways to support our trees
Building on our long-standing commitment to a greener, more climate-resilient borough, we are partnering with Trees for Streets to give residents, schools, community groups and businesses a simple and meaningful way to help make our borough even greener.
Residents and businesses can now fund new trees in their local area. Choose a location, and if approved, a mature tree will be planted, helping improve air quality, provide shade and support wildlife.

If planting a tree isn’t for you, you can still support your neighbourhood’s canopy by watering a street tree.
Street trees provide the shade and cool areas we seek out in the hot weather. They are pockets of nature in the middle of our paved world, helping to keep us mentally and physically healthy as we go about our lives. Yet they suffer from the heat just like we do; they also need extra care when they are young, just like we do, and you can help!
