Find out your risk of type 2 diabetes

21 May 2024

In Richmond, there are an estimated 7,200 people known to be at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Find out about free local resources to help you understand and manage your risk.

Did you know type 2 diabetes can go undetected for up to 10 years, and some people can be at risk or already have this condition without knowing?

Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week (20 to 26 May) is all about supporting people to understand their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the types of things that increase risk, and the local support available to help you manage and lower your risk if necessary.

You can check your risk in as little as a few minutes with Diabetes UK’s free Know Your Risk tool. All you need to do is answer a short series of questions, provide a couple measurements, and your results will be shown to you instantly on screen.

If you find out that you’re at moderate or high risk, you can take your results to your GP, who can help you plan your next steps.

If you’re aged over 40, you may also be eligible for a free NHS Health Check. This quick 20-minute lifestyle check, available at GP surgeries and pharmacies across the borough, helps you understand your risk of common heart conditions, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease or dementia. Based on your results, you will be given tailored healthy living advice and may be referred for further checks and support.

Find out if you’re eligible and book an NHS Health Check today.

You can also learn more about diabetes prevention, type 2 diabetes specifically, and local support available to you.
