We are proud to share that Councillor Julia Neden-Watts, Deputy Leader of Richmond Council and Chair of the Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Services Committee, was named a finalist for the LGiU Innovator of the Year.
This accolade reflects her dedication and leadership in tackling the climate emergency and building a more sustainable and resilient Richmond upon Thames.
Leader of Richmond Council, Cllr Gareth Roberts, said: "Julia's dedication to creating a sustainable future for our borough is unwavering, and this nomination is a reflection of her hard work, innovation, and ability to bring people together. We are immensely proud of her achievements, and I have no doubt she will continue to lead the way in addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainability.”
Cllr Neden-Watts has been instrumental in shaping the borough’s future through her work on the Richmond Local Plan, ensuring sustainability is at its heart. Her courage in championing innovative ideas like the living locally concept demonstrates her commitment to creating vibrant, connected communities. She has also ensured that local voices are heard and involved every step of the way.
Under her leadership, Richmond has seen the launch of its Sustainability Forum, bringing together community groups to collaborate on climate action, and the introduction of Climate Action Microgrants, helping residents to turn ideas into impactful projects. Initiatives like Twickenham’s Library of Things and the borough’s expanded food waste services, both of which she strongly supported, are now setting the standard for sustainability across London.
Cllr Neden-Watts has also shown foresight in preparing Richmond for a changing climate, driving the development of climate risk mapping and championing a borough-wide adaptation and resilience strategy. Her role chairing the Joint Thames Strategy partnership will be pivotal in protecting and enhancing our much loved River Thames
We are thrilled to see her passion, bold leadership, and commitment to our community recognised and this is a testament to the difference she has made for Richmond upon Thames.
