Protecting your home from burglary
18 November 2025
With nights getting darker, Richmond Council is reminding residents of the simple things to do to keep their homes safe from burglary.
Here are some tips to protect your home:
- Don’t give burglars a hiding place – keep your front boundaries low and trim hedges so your property is visible from the street
- Use solid doors and locks
- Secure your windows
- Don’t leave valuables lying around or visible from outside your home
- Use timers to make your home look occupied if you’re out at night
- Sign up for local alerts and updates so you hear of suspicious activity in your area
- Consider making your own security upgrades before winter through CCTV or shed alarms
By working together, we can reduce burglary risk and create safer neighbourhoods.
Richmond Council Leader, Councillor Gareth Roberts says: “Keeping our community safe starts with each of us taking simple steps to protect our homes. By making it tougher for burglars, we can all make it easier for ourselves and our neighbours to feel safe and secure.”
