Charity rescues three tonnes of old furniture for community re-use

Community news on behalf of Richmond Furniture Scheme | 17 October 2024

Over the past year, the Richmond Furniture Scheme has partnered with us to collect nearly three tonnes of furniture at local mega skip events, and to upcycle and distribute back into the community.

The Richmond Furniture Scheme is a local re-use charity that fixes, paints and sells donated furniture and refurbished appliances at affordable prices. It gives good quality items a new lease of life, reduces waste and ensures everyone can create a lovely home.

Throughout the past year, they have partnered with us to collect re-usable items brought forward by residents for recycling at mega skip days around the borough, a high proportion of which has already gone back out to local customers. Surplus bicycles they’ve collected have gone to the Recirculate charity - it sends donated bikes to HMP Aylesbury to be repaired and supplied to NHS trusts for staff.

Friday 18 October is National Re-Use Day and celebrates the powerful act of re-use to save money, cut waste, help others and protect the planet.

There are many local resources available in Richmond to support residents to give their items a new purpose and save them going to waste. Find out about local opportunities to donate sell, share and repair old items in the borough.

Our Mega Skip Days, run in partnership with the Richmond Furniture Scheme and Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP), are all about providing residents the opportunity to dispose of unwanted bulky household items for free and recycling, or donating, what’s collected. For updates on when the mega skip will next be in your area, join your local area Facebook group.
