Richmond Council reaffirms its commitment as a Borough of Sanctuary

Richmond upon Thames has reaffirmed it is a Borough of Sanctuary – a place that welcomes and supports people seeking safety from conflict and persecution. This was firmly stated at the Full Council meeting last night. 

Councillor Fiona Sacks, Sanctuary Champion, who brought forward a motion, said: “Richmond has always been a place that values compassion and community.

“We will continue to stand with those seeking safety, and that everyone who makes our borough their home will be treated with dignity and respect.”

Richmond upon Thames has a long and proud history of supporting sanctuary seekers and refugees, recognising the positive contribution they make to the borough’s communities, economy and culture.

Being a Borough of Sanctuary means working with local partners, schools, faith groups and residents to foster a culture of welcome, compassion and inclusion. It reflects the borough’s shared belief that everyone deserves to live safely and with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances.

“While the issue has, at times, become a focus of national debate, this Council remains clear in its commitment to supporting those in need and upholding the borough’s values of kindness, fairness and respect,” added Councillor Sacks.

Councillor Nancy Baldwin, Spokesperson for Communities, Equalities and the Voluntary Sector, agreed: “This commitment is about more than words – it’s about action.

“Working alongside our local partners and voluntary groups, we’ll continue to provide practical support and foster a sense of belonging for those who are rebuilding their lives here. Richmond’s strength lies in its compassion for others, and this reaffirmation recognises that.”

Richmond upon Thames was formally recognised as a Borough of Sanctuary in 2024, joining a national network of councils, community groups and organisations working together to make the UK a more welcoming place for all.
