Richmond Moves forward with ambitious plans to keep the borough moving

19 September 2025

Richmond Council has endorsed the second year of its Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough strategy – building on a strong first year that has helped leisure, sport and physical activity to become a natural and accessible part of daily life in Richmond upon Thames.

At the latest Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Committee earlier this week (16 September), councillors praised the progress that has been made so far.

Councillor Alan Juriansz, Lead Member for Sport, said:

Richmond Moves is about making sure everyone, regardless of age, background or ability, has the chance to be active and feel connected. The progress made in year one shows what’s possible when we work together.”

Last year saw major investment in facilities secured, the launch of the Fairer Access Scheme, new partnerships through the Community Sports and Physical Activity Network, and action to remove inequalities through a dedicated Women and Girls Working Group.

Councillor Alan Juriansz added: “I’m proud to endorse the Year 2 Action Plan, which will help us go even further in building a healthier, more inclusive borough.”

Year 2 will introduce dementia-friendly leisure centres and expand initiatives supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities and older adults. The Council will also continue investing in facilities and environmentally friendly improvements.

“Richmond remains one of the most active boroughs in the country, thanks in part to our commitment to helping residents incorporate more exercise in their daily lives. This strategy aims to ensure even more residents can benefit from the physical, social, and mental health gains of being active.”

The five-year plan continues to focus on boosting participation and improving wellbeing across the borough, with particular support for those who are currently less active.
