Jem Panufnik exhibition
12 November 2011 - 14 January 2012
Twickenham-born artist, record producer, DJ and filmmaker Jem Panufnik’s highly distinctive artwork combines comic book cool with a heavy dose of dark humour. This explosive exhibition in Richmond’s Riverside Gallery brings together his finest examples of record sleeve art, printmaking and paintings.
Since the mid-nineties Jem Panufnik has been right at the cutting edge of underground art culture, most notably with Finger Lickin’ Records, the award-winning dance music label he co-founded and which for over a decade acted as a springboard for his multitude of talents ranging from graphics, illustration and animation to DJing, composition and record production. His stunning visual creations have adorned countless record covers, t-shirts, club and festival projections from Glastonbury to San Francisco, as well as posters, flyers and other music-related ephemera, most of which are now extremely collectable. Richmond Council is proud to exhibit a selection of his most iconic artwork, including his remarkable sleeve illustrations for renowned club acts such as Plump DJs, Drumattic Twins and Krafty Kuts, alongside rarely seen original drawings and screen prints. Also on view will be new paintings, most of which are on public display for the first time.
Titling the show Riverside Robo-Attack Panufnik pays homage to the alien-invading, hot women-inhabiting, rocket ship world of the classic B-movie poster which continues to inspire much of his work. With his own poster depicting a battalion of giant robots throwing Richmond town centre into turmoil, this fiery exhibition looks to do exactly that…
