Trading standards
We want to ensure a fair and safe trading environment for businesses, residents and visitors to Richmond. To do this we;
- Analyse information provided to us by the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service to see where businesses in the borough may require advice on fair trading practices
- Visit businesses in the borough to provide advice on an individual basis
- Engage in partnership work with other agencies (for example, the Office of Fair Trading, The Department for Business Innovation and Skills and Trading Standards services in other authorities) on issues affecting traders and consumers in Richmond
- Enforce the law relating to age-restricted products such as alcohol, cigarettes, knives and fireworks
Our first priority is to support businesses in the borough and ensure that they have the information they need to compete on a 'level playing field'.

Citizen's Advice Consumer Service
To help consumers resolve any problems with traders, or questions about trading practices, we work in partnership with the Citizen’s Advice consumer service. This is a telephone and web-based service that provides impartial advice on individual queries as well as collating information on traders nationally and ensuring that complaints are directed to the enforcement authority best placed to deal with them.
