Complete an empty home review

We are undertaking a review of all empty homes across the borough. This is to determine whether properties remain empty or have recently become occupied.

All responses to the review are handled by a centrally based local government scanning facility in Nottingham - they process documents on behalf of many local authorities across the United Kingdom.

About the review

It is important that we ensure that properties that we have recorded as being empty homes are being charged correctly and that there are no cases where the situation has recently changed.  

This review exercise will enable us to correct accounts via customers volunteering updated information regarding occupancy and also to investigate further where we have reason to believe there may be a discrepancy in the amount of Council Tax being charged.

Legislation exists which allows accounts to be adjusted and backdated Council Tax to be recovered. Those who are proved to have knowingly defrauded the system may also face prosecution.

Letters to residents

We will shortly be sending a letter to customers whose properties we have recorded as empty homes asking for them to confirm their current circumstances. This enables us to keep our records up to date and is also a way of allowing residents to notify us if there has been a change in their circumstances.

All responses will be handled by a centrally based local government scanning facility based in Nottingham.

This exercise this is one of many steps that we are taking to stamp out fraud.

Checks will be made to ensure information provided is accurate. However, occasionally circumstances may not be so easy to explain. To help in these situations we have included some additional information to help with any questions that can arise throughout this review period.

Respond to the review within 14 days to ensure the correct amount of Council Tax is being charged.
