Naming ceremonies
A naming ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the birth of a baby or welcome an adopted child, or stepchildren, into a family.
This is a secular (non religious) ceremony, and has no legal standing, but is a unique opportunity to gather family and friends together for an enjoyable and memorable occasion.
The ceremony will:
- Welcome the child into the family or wider community
- Announce the names that have been given, and maybe the reasons behind their choice
- Involve family and friends in making promises of commitment to the child, and to support you in their upbringing
What to expect
The ceremony can include music, readings, personal vows and promises of your choice, and usually lasts about 20 - 30 minutes.
Every naming ceremony is entirely personal and tailored to individual needs. The ceremony can be combined with a marriage or civil partnership ceremony, or a renewal of vows ceremony. It can be held to celebrate the child’s birthday, or combined with an anniversary celebration.
A commemorative certificate will be provided, together with a gift from Richmond Library Service.
The birth certificate(s) must be produced when booking. Please note that the ceremony cannot be used to change a child’s name or surname.
Ceremony costs
The fee is dependent upon the venue and the day of the week that is chosen for the ceremony. To find out more please visit our registration service fees page.
