Licensing a venue for marriage and civil partnerships

To hold a wedding or civil partnership ceremony at premises in Richmond, the venue must be approved by the local authority.

Before you start

Eligibility criteria

You must be the proprietor or a trustee of the premises to apply for permission to hold civil ceremonies or weddings.

When applying on behalf of a limited company, you will need to make a separate statement of the names and addresses of all the directors.

Fee

Our current fees and charges list shows the cost of licensing a venue for marriage and civil partnerships for five years.

The Registrar General has confirmed that all venues which are currently licensed for marriages and civil partnerships will be deemed to be licensed for same sex marriages and there will be no need to re–apply for approval.

How to apply

You should download and complete an application form for licensing a venue(pdf, 181KB), and return this to:

The application form gives notes on requirements before approval can be granted. These should be read in full.

The application must be in writing (including by electronic means) and include:

• The name and address of the applicant
• Supporting information
• A plan of the premises which clearly identifies the room or rooms in which the proceedings will occur

What happens next

Your premises will be inspected. Your application and plan will be made available to the public for inspection and a public notice of the application must be displayed on our website as part of a public consultation process.

To be granted, your application must be in the correct format and your premises deemed suitable. Conditions may be imposed to your approval.
