Thomson House School - SS19

The School Street is proposed along Vernon Road from Sheen Lane to Church Avenue, South Worple Way from Sheen Lane to Church Avenue and includes Howgate Road and Oaklands Road.

Hours of operation

The School Street will operate Monday to Friday from 8 to 8.45am and 3.30 to 4.15pm, during term time only.

School Street signs will remain open during school holidays and half term breaks. It is not a statutory requirement to close them.

Method

Signs and possibly volunteers managing barriers will warn drivers of the days and times when the School Street is enforced. In future, CCTV ANPR enforcement cameras may be employed to enforce this School Street. Residents will be made aware and the website will be updated in advance of any change to the enforcement methods.

Next steps

We undertook a pre-trial consultation for this proposal.

Following positive feedback and engagement with residents and the school, the School Street scheme was reported to the January 2023 Transport and Air Quality Committee (Item 30.

Feedback from residents requested the School Street be extended and the restricted area has therefore been increased up to Church Avenue. Extending past Church Avenue would result in too many closure points and potential for filtering through unsuitable roads making the scheme unfeasible and unmanageable.

A School Street trial and consultation alongside will start on 24 April 2023 under and experimental Traffic Order. Please visit the consultation to make presentations by 24 November 2023.

We will continue to endeavour to make School Streets more visible in the borough whilst still using the regulation DfT signs as is necessary to make them enforceable.
