Support purchasing a bike

Try Before You Bike

Try Before You Bike (TBYB) is a council-supported scheme that makes it easy and affordable to trial a bike before committing to ownership. Instead of upfront costs, monthly payments go towards a purchase.

The scheme is suitable for anyone looking to make cycling part of everyday life.

For residents

You can choose a bike that suits your lifestyle. All bikes include:

  • Accessories
  • Insurance
  • Home delivery

Bike costs:

  • Pedal and e-bike - £25 per month for 6 months (total value £150)
  • Electric cargo bike - £150 per month for 12 months (total value £1,800)

No upfront payment - just a chance to try cycling in a way that works for you.

Both the voucher and your payments go towards owning the bike if you decide to keep it.

For local businesses

Local businesses can take part through dedicated cargo bike vouchers to support greener deliveries and operations. Vouchers cost £300 per month for 6 months (total value £1,800).

At the end of the trial, you can choose to either:

  • Buy the bike at a discounted rate
  • Continue to hire it
  • Return it with no strings attached

Cargo bikes can help businesses:

  • Make local deliveries
  • Travel between sites
  • Switch to a more sustainable mode of transport

How to apply

You can apply for a bike online as part of the Good Move Scheme.
