Road signs and street furniture
Signs on the public highway need to conform to strict regulations. We are unable to accept requests for signs that do not conform to these standards.
It is our policy to try to reduce street clutter by removing and minimising the number of signs, bollards and other street furniture.
Request a new sign or a sign change
If you believe a new sign is required or think existing signage has been placed incorrectly or should be changed or removed, you should let us know.
Complete our Changes to markings, signs or street furniture form.
Directional signage
It is our policy to not allow directional signage to venues or locations which have an A to Z postal address and can be clearly seen from the main highway. This helps to ensure that street furniture is kept to a minimum.
Mirrors on the highway
It is our policy not to erect mirrors on the public highway, and residents are also discouraged from erecting them on private property.
Mirrors are not covered by traffic regulations and require special authorisation by the Department for Transport (DfT). So, each individual location would need to be considered on site specific circumstances.
The DfT is reluctant to authorise mirrors as experience has shown that rather than improving road safety, they can actually reduce it, for the following reasons:
- They reflect light and can interfere with a driver's vision
- They reduce the ability to judge an oncoming vehicle's speed
- They can create an unreasonable dependence on the mirror
- If dirty, they can distort or restrict the view
- They are an easy target for vandals
It is also worth highlighting that the Highway Code encourages drivers to join the highway in a forward gear to help maximise sightlines and reduce the likelihood of conflict with pedestrians and passing traffic.
As per Rule 201 of the Highway Code: 'Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can'.
