Translation and interpreting services

We want to make sure you can get information about our services that you can understand.

What we can provide

We can provide telephone and in-person interpreters as well as information in different formats including Braille, large print, audio or electronic format.

Translating web pages

It is quick and easy to translate web pages using a web browser.

Translate using Chrome

If a page is written in another language, you can use Chrome to translate the page.

  1. On the right of the address bar, click Translate
  2. Select your preferred language
  3. Chrome will translate the page

You can also right click on the page and translate.

Translate using Edge

You can input your preferred languages in Settings and more > Settings > Languages.

If you open a page written in a different language, Microsoft Edge will automatically prompt you to translate it.

Understanding documents

If you need to understand a document in another language we can provide an interpreter in the first instance, over the telephone or face to face. We can also provide translations where a clear need is demonstrated.

Translation to English

We do not offer translation to English for foreign documents. You will need to make your own arrangements for this.

Sign language

If you need someone to sign for you (British Sign Language) we can arrange this, but because of the national shortage of sign language interpreters it could take up to three weeks.

Visiting in person

If you speak very little English, or no English at all, you can visit one of the reception areas listed below during office hours. We will arrange a telephone interpreting service to help you, including arranging for someone to talk to you in your own language if you need it.

You may have to wait or come back for someone to talk to you in your language, but the reception staff will provide information to you about this.

Waiting times depend on the language, as there is less translator availability for some languages.

How to access services

If you know which of our services you need, you can get access to translation, interpreting, BSL interpreting, large print, electronic format, Braille or audio tape transcription by contacting them direct. You can ring, email, fax, write or visit in person.
