Embracing diversity in the borough

Author: Councillor Kuldev Sehra
Title: Councillor for Whitton Ward

I immigrated to the UK in 1982 and I have been living here in South West London since then.

It is well recognised that London is a very multicultural and diverse city. The different variety of cultures, cuisines and communities help make London so vibrant and interesting. Richmond upon Thames is one of the safest and most welcoming boroughs in our city for those from any community. Having lived here for some 40 years, I have seen Richmond upon Thames offer even more events, workshops, and exhibitions to highlight the power that culture has to bring people together and make a positive change in large and small communities.

Through my role working as a Councillor in the borough, I have seen how it helps young people by giving them a platform to share their voices, talents, and opinions. Our local schools, youth and community centres are full of activism and standing up for equality. I have attended many events which have brought communities together with themes based on food, music, the arts, and religion.

Throughout our observance of South Asian Heritage Month, I have felt honoured to hear and celebrate the stories shared from local residents of South Asian heritage. We learned about their culture, their history, experiences, memories, and their role in the community.

It is great to celebrate how inclusive our borough is. People from all walks of life can take part and enjoy the benefits that diversity brings.
