Sustainable business growth, opportunities for diverse communities, and revitalised town centres were central topics this week as Richmond Council Leader, Councillor Gareth Roberts, met with Laura Citron OBE, Chief Executive Officer of London & Partners – London’s growth agency – to explore new opportunities for economic development across Richmond upon Thames.
The meeting, held at Richmond’s historic York House, focused on how the borough can continue attracting investment, boosting its visitor economy, and supporting vibrant high streets – building on its reputation as a place to visit, live, and work.
The discussion also aligned with the London Growth Plan, a shared vision aimed at strengthening local communities and driving London’s global competitiveness. Richmond upon Thames already plays a key role in this plan, offering a unique combination of green spaces, high-quality office accommodation, and well-connected neighbourhoods – offering a rare blend of London’s energy, alongside its cherished parks and riverside setting.
The borough is increasingly becoming a hub for high-value, forward-thinking businesses looking for somewhere different to locate their London operations. Major employers such as eBay and Not On The High Street are already based in Richmond, attracted by its strong transport links, access to talent, and the enviable work-life balance it offers.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Gareth Roberts said: “Richmond upon Thames is a jewel in London’s crown – combining natural beauty, strong communities, and a commitment to long-term economic growth.
“Delivering our vision for Richmond Town Centre is a prime example of this vision. We’re creating a modern, accessible destination that celebrates the area’s character while fostering growth and supporting the town centre economy.”
The work underway for the Richmond Town Centre – now in its mobilisation phase – is central to the Council’s goal of creating a sustainable, well-connected borough. It will deliver improved public spaces, better transport links, and greater support for independent businesses, ensuring a lively and inclusive town centre for the future.
Also attending the meeting was Councillor Phil Giesler, Richmond Council’s Spokesperson for Business and Economic Growth, who is supporting the delivery of this work to promote enterprise, investment, and innovation across the borough.
“I was delighted to meet with Laura Citron to discuss how we can continue to support businesses and attract talent, reinforcing Richmond as one of the best places in London to live, work, and visit,” he added.
Laura Citron OBE, CEO of London & Partners, said: “Richmond is a unique and highly attractive part of London, offering so much to residents, businesses, and visitors. London & Partners is proud to support boroughs like Richmond in unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation.”
Richmond Council will continue working with partners across the capital to promote the borough’s distinctive offer, support enterprise, inclusion, and build a sustainable future for the local community.
