Let’s tackle fly-tipping together

21 October 2026

We're stepping up action against fly-tipping, monitoring hot spots, fining offenders and taking legal action in serious cases. So, what does count as fly-tipping and what is the correct way to get rid of waste?

What is fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is illegally dumping a single bin bag of waste or more. It includes leaving furniture by roadsides, bulky items beside recycling banks such as large cardboard boxes, bags next to bins, or clothes and toys outside charity shops.

Fly-tipping is a crime and officers can issue £1,000 fixed penalty notices for small-scale fly-tips. Larger offences can lead to fines of up to £50,000 and/or imprisonment.

Report fly-tipping

If you’ve seen a fly-tip on a public highway or in a Council-managed park, report it to us online or through the My Richmond app. Give the exact location and, if safe, add a description and photographs. Your information will be treated in confidence.

How to dispose of waste responsibly

Donate quality items that are still in good condition to charity or pass on to others to keep items in use. If you have a household item, small appliance or clothing that needs repaired, take it to The Fixery or a local repair cafe.

If you have considered reuse, repair and it can’t be recycled, book a bulky waste collection or book a slot at Townmead Road Refuse and Recycling Centre.

Private land owners seeking a fly-tip clearance service should contact a privately operating licensed waste carrier or contact us for a quote.

Let’s tackle fly-tipping together to help keep Richmond clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.
