Listen to episode 3 of Talk Richmond on muggings in the borough

Release Date: 10 August 2020

Sergeant Scott Brody from the Metropolitan Police and Barbara Lingle Elliot from the community group Mothers Against Muggings joined Cllr Jim Millard to discuss muggings (or personal robberies) and how an alarming increase in incidents led to the Police and the community increasing preventative action.

The 17-minute episode dives into why young people are often both the victim and the suspect of muggings in the borough, what the figures are, what both the police and Mothers Against Muggings have done to reduce incidents, as well as tips on how to better protect yourself.

Cllr Jim Millard, Tenants’ Champion and Host of Talk Richmond, said:

“There were 216 victims of personal robbery in the borough in 2017 and this jumped to 406 victims in 2019. Whilst Richmond upon Thames has some of the lowest crime rates in London – this jump rightly caused some concern.

“Talking to Sgt Brodie and Barbara it’s clear that one of the things we can all do as a community is to speak about community safety and share the precautions that people, particularly young people, should take when out and about in London.

“The episode also includes a first-hand account from Alex, an 18-year-old who was mugged last summer. I encourage parents and carers to try to get the young people in their lives to give this episode a listen during the summer holidays.”
