Paying for parking

Visitors to these streets will be able to pay for parking using RingGo on their mobile phones. RingGo is a free to download mobile phone application service, which lets you pay for parking with a credit or debit card.

Clear instructions on paying for your parking are provided on signs at the roadside including the telephone number for RingGo and the unique location code where you are parked. Most users prefer to use the mobile phone app which is available on iOS and Android.

All parking ticket machines programmed for removal will display a label for up to three months prior to it being decommissioned. When decommissioned the parking ticket machine will be covered with a corset displaying the primary payment method for parking.

The removal of the machines will not impact the cost of parking.

Enforcement

The RingGo facility relies on vehicle specific information such as your vehicle registration number. Our Civil Enforcement Officers can check for active parking sessions by looking up your vehicle on their handheld device. There is no need to display anything in your vehicle.

Alternative ways to pay

RingGo is the primary payment method for parking, the significant majority of paid for parking transactions are made through this service. Fewer customers use pay and display facilities as cashless parking is more convenient and practical.

As an alternative to the RingGo option, residents can use visitor permits for their visitors.

30-minute concession

We are not removing the 30-minute free concession for residents, and Richmond Card holders will still be entitled to its benefits when paying with RingGo. To do so residents must apply for residency status on the RingGo website.

Why we are removing pay and display machines

Removing pay and display parking ticket machines across the borough brings several benefits for us.

Digital payment efficiency

The adoption of our digital phone payment provider RingGo has led to a more efficient and convenient payment processes for users.

Reduced maintenance costs

Traditional pay and display parking ticket machines require regular maintenance and repair. Removing them has resulted in cost savings associated with maintenance, repairs and periodic machine upgrades. These 20 machines are used so infrequently that they cost more to maintain and operate than they generate in revenue.

Space utilisation

Their removal of has freed up space in urban environments, contributing to better aesthetics and improved pedestrian access.

Improved traffic flow

Simplified payment methods lead to quicker and smoother traffic flow around parking areas as drivers spend less time at pay and display parking ticket machines.

Enhanced accessibility

Digital payments have improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and they provide features such as voice assistance, larger font sizes, more user-friendly interfaces and the ability to pay for parking at the location of the parked vehicle. Remote top-ups are also possible removing the need to return to the vehicle if wishing to extend the duration of stay.

Environmental impact

The removal of physical machines has positive environmental impacts by reducing the need for paper tickets and receipts. Digital payment methods contribute to a decrease in paper usage and waste.

Integration with smart city initiatives

The move away from traditional machines aligns with broader smart city initiatives, facilitating the integration of parking systems with other urban technologies for more efficient kerbside management.

Real-time data and analytics

Digital payment helps us provide real-time data and analytics that enable better monitoring of parking utilisation, allowing us to make informed decisions about parking policies.

Reduced cash handling

Digital payment systems reduce the need for cash transactions, which may improve security and reduce the risk of theft or vandalism associated with traditional pay and display parking ticket machines.
