Traffic congestion
Traffic congestion occurs when there are too many vehicles all trying to pass through a location at the same time, which can result in significant delays on the public highway.
Congestion causes
There are several causes of traffic congestion, some which happen more frequently than others.
Road works
Road works can cause congestion by reducing the available lanes or diverting more traffic on to other roads. View information about road works taking place in the borough.
Special events
Some local establishments may have offers or events that attract additional visitors on specific days or times. Whilst we will not be aware of all of these types of events we do keep a record of larger events that will require a road closure or another type of traffic management.
Bad weather
Rain, wind and snow can all lead to people choosing to avoid walking, cycling or public transport, in favour of their own vehicle.
Report congestion
If you would like to report an instance of traffic congestion that is not related to any of the above causes, you can complete our online form.
We will add the details on to our list for review and will investigate if any further action is required.
