Nominate a local hero: Richmond Community Heroes Awards now open

7 January 2026

Local heroes are making a real difference across Richmond upon Thames every day – and now residents can help celebrate them.

Richmond Council has opened nominations for the 2025-26 Community Heroes Awards, inviting residents to shine a spotlight on the inspirational individuals, groups and businesses who volunteer their time to support others and strengthen the local community.

From saving surplus food to fight hunger, to protecting green spaces and uplifting the most vulnerable, some of the borough’s most inspiring grassroots initiatives were celebrated at last year’s awards – and now it’s time to nominate this year’s local heroes.

Councillor Nancy Baldwin, Spokesperson for Communities, Equalities and the Voluntary Sector, said the annual awards, now in their eighth year, recognise people who go above and beyond for Richmond – “often quietly, without recognition, and always with generosity and commitment”.

Every winner is nominated by residents, ensuring the awards truly reflect the communities they serve.

"Richmond upon Thames isn’t just a beautiful place to live – it’s a borough defined by the people who make it special," added Councillor Baldwin.

"Every day, local people are transforming lives of others through kindness, creativity, and community spirit.

"Whether it’s a neighbour, a volunteer, a community group or a local business, we all know someone who makes a difference. These awards are our chance to say thank you – and to make sure those efforts don’t go unnoticed."

Award categories are:

  • Business Contribution in the Community
  • Community Group of the Year
  • Community Project of the Year
  • Community Spirit Award
  • Environmental Award
  • Outstanding Volunteer
  • Trustee of the Year
  • Young Person Achievement
  • Lifetime Achievement

Nominations are open to anyone carrying out voluntary work in the borough and can be submitted in multiple categories.

A full list of categories, criteria and examples of previous winners can be found on the Community Heroes web page

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to the flagship Community Heroes Awards ceremony in late March 2026, where winners will be announced.
