Rate Books are another important source of information. From early times the Vestry had the power to levy a Church Rate for the maintenance of the church fabric. Later they were responsible for making a rate to support the poor as well as for highways, lighting etc. After that they were combined and collected as the General Rate. The information given in a rate book will vary depending upon the type of rate being collected and the date. Sometimes they will list both the owner and occupier, in others only the owner is recorded.
